Cornichonne chirped loudly in the cold air, then paused and cocked her ears. She had been making this strange sound all afternoon. Theyâd left the city of Montrenasse-sur-Terre far behind them the night before and slept under the cover of an old tree. But now, after they'd traveled in a straight line all morning, the cat was wandering in circles in the snow.
âWhere are we?â asked Delphine woozily. She kept fading in and out of consciousness from the pain of her burned paws. Had Alexander strapped her onto the catâs back so she wouldnât fall off, or were those his strong arms wrapped around her?
Alexander smoothed back her whiskers. âWeâre going somewhere safe.â
Delphine wasnât sure if she believed him. Even through the pain, she could feel the cat wandering aimlessly.
Alexander leaned forward. âUhâ¦Cornichonne? Are you sure you know where youâre going?â
Cornichonne nodded. âYiss. Weâre going to see the bats. Their cave is right around here somewhere. But everything looks the same under all this snow.â
âThe bats?â repeated Alexander.
âTheyâre my friends.â She chirped again, swiveling her ears. âIâm calling them now.â
Through half-open eyes, Delphine saw Alexander pass a paw over his forehead. She struggled to form a sentence. âCats and bats can talk together over distance? Sâthat true?â
He shrugged, then turned back to the cat. âHow exactly are you talking to them?â
âEcholocation,â replied Cornichonne.
As if on cue, a fluttering silhouette appeared above them, moving through the low-hanging fog. Cornichonne stopped in her tracks, her ears perking up.
âBats,â she said once more.
Delphine felt her head dipping even lower, her breath coming in shallow pants. Alexanderâs arms tightened around her. âWhatever weâre going to do, we have to do it quickly. Delphine needs our help.â
